The Queen will have a runner in the Cheltenham Gold Cup for the first time next week with a horse bequeathed to her by her late mother, prompting a flurry of bets at Buckingham Palace.
It will be an emotional occasion if the horse triumphs as the Queen’s distinctive colours – purple, scarlet and black – have never previously graced the winner’s enclosure at the Cheltenham Festival.

Hurricane Fly is out of the Cheltenham Festival after failing to recover from a bone splint. Willie Mullins, who trains the exciting five-year-old, had no option but to draw stumps on the preparation of a horse which would almost certainly have started favourite for his selected target.
Mullins is now aiming him for the Punchestown Festival in April. “We hoped he would have made more progress this week,” the trainer said. “He hasn’t, and we basically ran out of time to prepare him for Cheltenham. It’s disappointing, but the main thing is that he should be fine longer-term.”

With concerns over the wellbeing of last year’s Gold Cup winner Denman, it is 2007 hero Kauto Star who has emerged as a well-supported favourite in recent weeks and he is sure to be locked into first place for the majority of those making entries for this competition.
But what about the tricky second and third positions? Will Neptune Collonges once again make the frame? Can Denman reverse recent placings with the fast-improving Madison du Berlais and produce the improvement that Paul Nicholls says he expects from that run? Or will we see another year where outsiders fill the frame, like when hot favourite Best Mate beat the unconsidered Truckers Tavern and Harbour Pilot into second and third in 2003?
Or perhaps you think that Kauto Star himself is beatable and that this year’s Gold Cup could see another long-odds winner in the traditions of Cool Ground and Nortons Coin? The braver you are with your selections, the more chance you have of being the sole winner of the prize, but remember that it’s one entry per person so make your prediction pay!
